6 Key Lessons from the Book "The 4-hour workweek"

by admin - 26-11-2022

Are you tired of your normal hum drum 9-5 routine of going to work and doing the same melancholy repetitive tasks day in and day out? Many people face this question but struggle to come up with answers. Most feel the only alternative is to run a business and be one’s own boss.

But as award- willing self-help guru Timothy Ferris writes in his book: The 4-hour workweek, Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere and Join The New Rich, there is a third alternative.

Ferris developed the ideas present in the book while working for 14 hours everyday at his sports nutrition supplement company, Brain QUICKEN. Overwhelmed by the excess work and lack of free time Ferris took a sabbatical and did a world tour. His experiences there and escape from never ending work schedules formed the subject matter of this book.

In his book Ferris sums up in a 6-point agenda as to how to break free from the drudgery of daily life. To know more read on further.

   1. The DEAL :

People have been bombarded with the propaganda that life is very hard and complicated when in actuality it need not be that way. There is a four-step process to increase time and financial freedom. Define what you are doing. Reset and eliminate the unnecessary. Automate everything possible. Go out and live life and liberate yourself.

4-step process to increase time and financial freedom

• D -Define what you going to do

• E -Reset ’and eliminate the unnecessary

• A -Automate everything possible, this may include outsourcing.

• L -Go out and live it.

   2. Excitement:

We need to introspect and delve within ourselves and ask ourselves the hard question that “what is it that excites us in our daily life”. This realization as to what excites us can create a bliss in our work life. Excitement and happiness are not words which are very far off from each other and are almost synonymous. Performing a task out of excitement is equal to the happiness we chase after.

   3. Efficiency and effectiveness:

Spending more time and efforts doing repetitive tasks does not make them more crucial. It is important to streamline efficiency and effectiveness. To bring about efficiency in any given task do it the most productive way possible. Following Parkinson’s Law is a good guide.

   4. Decentralization is key:

Delegating your work to others, automating repetitive work and outsourcing work and also using a virtual assistant can help free up our time and life. Earning money is not the only end game in life. Another equally important goal is about freeing up your time and using that freedom to be creative and innovative rather than being caught up in the hum drum of daily life.

   5. Find a market for your goods and services:

Creating demand artificially is hard and next to impossible. It is very important to find a market and customers for your goods and services and then devising and producing the best goods and services that fit the bill. One needs a product to sell – one that can either be downloaded or shipped so as to reduce the limitations of a per-hour based business model.

  6. Take mini-retirements throughout your life instead of saving it all up in the end. The author breaks the common assumption that we need to wait until the end of your career to embrace retirement.
